What is workforce planning?

Workforce planning - is a process that helps a company understand how many employees and with what skills it will need in the future. Such planning is necessary to avoid a shortage of employees or, on the contrary, an oversupply of them.

HR planning starts with analyzing the current composition of employees: how many there are now, what tasks they perform and what specialists may be missing. The HR department and management then forecast what changes may occur, such as company growth, seasonal fluctuations or new projects.

The result of workforce planning is a strategy for hiring, training or redistributing employees. For example, if a company needs more programmers of a certain profile, it can start searching for new specialists in advance or organize training for current employees.
