What is buddy system?

Buddy system is a mentoring practice where an experienced employee is assigned to a newcomer to help him or her get up to speed with the company. “Buddy” acts as a mentor who introduces the newcomer to the company culture, rules and daily processes.

For example, if a new employee joins the sales team, their buddy can walk them through the CRM system, share best practices for customer interactions, and answer any questions. This makes onboarding smoother and helps newcomers integrate into the team faster.

Buddying is especially popular in large companies, where it can be overwhelming for new hires to figure everything out on their own. A buddy doesn’t just help with job-related tasks — they also provide emotional support, making new employees feel more comfortable and confident in their new role.

This practice is particularly valuable in remote work environments, where it’s harder for new employees to get a feel for company culture. In these cases, buddies schedule online meetings to help the newcomer adapt to virtual processes and connect with the team.

Experience shows that having a buddy reduces turnover among new employees, as they feel more confident and supported. Companies can also formalize the responsibilities of the buddies and even reward them for successfully helping newcomers adapt.
