What is salting?

Salting is when someone takes a job at a company not to perform their duties, but to gather internal information — often on behalf of competitors or other interested parties.

Salting can involve:

  • collecting commercial or technological data,
  • identifying weaknesses in company processes,
  • creating internal disruptions to slow down operations.
To prevent salting, companies often conduct thorough background checks before hiring, such as verifying references, requesting employment history records, or conducting in-depth interviews.

Salting is widely considered unethical and, in many countries, illegal. Companies that become victims of salting may take legal action against those responsible for this practice.
