Shortened workweek

What is a shortened workweek?

A shortened workweek is a work schedule where employees work fewer days or hours per week while maintaining their employment status. This arrangement can be a temporary measure or a permanent practice within a company.

Here’s how it works: instead of the traditional five-day schedule, an employee might work only four days but still handle the same responsibilities. Depending on the agreement, their salary may remain the same or be adjusted proportionally.

A shortened workweek can be introduced for various reasons:

  • Company decision: to cut costs during challenging periods or boost productivity.
  • Employee request: to improve work-life balance.
Companies experimenting with a four-day workweek often report increased productivity and higher employee satisfaction. Employees appreciate having more time for family, hobbies, and rest.

However, this schedule requires careful planning to ensure that tasks are completed efficiently within the reduced timeframe. In industries requiring constant coverage, a shortened workweek may only be feasible for certain roles.
